Why Hockey is so much better
Great, Great article by Gare Joyce, over at ESPN's Page 2. Essentially, David Carle, a hockey prospect playing in a Minnesota High School, was diagnosed with a rare disease where any strenuous physical activity is harmful. So he told teams not to draft him. He also had a hockey scholarship at the University of Denver. But the hockey community responded. The University of Denver kept his scholarship, a full ride. And the Tampa Bay Lightning drafted him with their 7th round pick. David can now say he was drafted in the NHL. What an amazing gesture. It's not often you see this in life. You rarely see it in sports. And the hockey community proved what sports can do. Because, quite frankly, sports aren't about winning or losing. They aren't about statistics. No, they're about making people happy, about fulfilling dreams, and putting a smile on someone's face. David Carle will never suit up and play hockey again. But, the hockey community suited up for him.
