All-Star Game: Overrated?
I used to like the All-Star Game. I used to like the Home Run Derby. I don't anymore. It's been overrated, overhyped, and overexposed. And after awhile, I'm just sick of it. Sure, it was fun. It was nice to see all of the great players together, playing as a team. Now? Strictly a product of the ESPN hype machine. Since when is the All-Star game more important than the actual season? Part of it is due to the "winner takes home-field". The whole "This one counts" nonsense. It shouldn't count. It should be fun. It's not. It's been ruined by overexposure. The All-Star game shouldn't be the talk of the town. I'm a Yankee fan. And it's nice to see the All-Star Game in Yankee Stadium's final year (More on that in a later post). But enough is enough. Let's focus on what it should be: A fun game, that focuses on the great players. And I'm sick and tired of seeing this game turn into something of importance. It shouldn't be important. It should be a break from the wear and tear of the daily routine. There shouldn't be the snubs. And the fan vote should stop. Players who have no business being there, are there, just because of their popularity. Alfonso Soriano, hurt for two months, was voted in. Ridiculous. It should be about the game, a celebration of players who make this great game great. I want a change. Jayson Stark agrees too. Personally, I think we should just get rid of All-Star games altogether. Just take the four days off, recharge, and get ready for the second half. At least that way, we don't kid ourselves into thinking that this game is important.
