Offseason Plans- Blue Jays
The Jays are an enigma. Everyone seems to like them, but then they self-implode. What will they do in the offseason to fix that? Let's see.
JAYS OFFSEASON PLAN:
Who Will they bring back?: They don't have many impending free agents. You have to assume AJ Burnett will opt out. David Eckstein, a huge disappointment, will not be back either. The catching situation needs to be resolved, as Rod Barajas and Gregg Zaun are free agents. I expect Zaun to leave, and Barajas to stay. Kevin Mench might be back.
Who will they get?: They'll need a starter to fill Burnett's void. Jon Garland, Derek Lowe, or Ryan Dempster would do the trick. You could say they need a second basemen, but they are high on Joe Inglett. A left fielder might be nice.
Projected '09 Rotation:
Halladay
Marcum
McGowan
Lowe
Litsch
Projected '09 Lineup:
Barajas, C
Overbay, 1B
Inglett, 2B
McDonald, SS
Rolen, 3B
Jason Michaels, LF
Wells, CF
Rios, RF
Stairs, DH
Relievers/Other Acquisitions:
Jason LaRue, C
Mark Grudzielanek, 2B
They have great pitching, and seemingly pretty good hitting. Next up: We move to the AL Central and start with the Royals.

burnett is not going anywhere

Really? I think he could get some big money elsewhere, maybe the Cubs.

cubs dont need him.. they have zambrano, harden and dempster already.

I believe that Burnett will opt out and sign elsewhere, maybe the Rangers?

Nah, I’m hearing Baltimore or Nationals, as he lives there in the offseason

I have also heard Washington. You would think a guy that will be so highly sought after would go where he could get 15+ wins per year.

Money talks, unfortunately

Very true. Then again, I’ve also heard rumors of some interest from both NY clubs. Have you?
August 23rd, 2008 - 00:06
I have not heard that. But it makes sense. Probably more to the Mets, than the Yanks though.
August 23rd, 2008 - 00:30
Yeah. The Mets will likely lose Oliver Perez (and Pedro Martinez, I believe), and they don’t have any All-Star quality starter ready to make the leap from AAA that I know of. If I’m wrong, please let me know here.

Jon Niese is that guy. Maybe not All-Star, but serviceable. Carlos Muniz might fit the bill, as well. But if Perez goes, they will need a big-time, proven starter. Someone like Burnett would make sense then. And yes, Pedro will be a free agent. And he won’t be coming back.

I always forget about Niese for some reason. But I could see either Perez or Burnett being offered the type of deal Pedro got.
