Offseason Plans- Rays
America's new team, the Tampa Rays, are surprising everyone. So what will they do in the offseason? Let's take a look.
RAYS OFFSEASON PLANS
Who do they bring back?: Carl Crawford will be back, as they will pick up his option. Rocco Baldelli will not be back. Same with Trever Miller. Cliff Floyd, 36, with a 2.75 mil option is iffy. Great clubhouse guy, but he is getting up there in age.
Who do they get?: They really don't have many holes to fill. They could strengthen the bullpen. They would love to have K-Rod, but the money will be too much. How about Brandon Lyon? I could see a Jon Garland coming to Tampa. Milton Bradley would be a coup; but Raul Ibanez would be cheaper. A Right fielder could be in order. Not much out there though.
Projected '09 Rotation:
Kazmir
Shields
Garza
Garland
Price
Projected '09 Lineup:
Navarro, C
Pena, 1B
Iwamura, 2B
Bartlett, SS
Longoria, 3B
Crawford, LF
Upton, CF
Hinske/Gomes/Gross, RF
Ibanez, DH
Relievers/Other Acquisitions:
Brandon Lyon,RP
Rich Aurillia, INF
Still a very good team, and they're not losing many players. Next up: Orioles.

No love for Edwin Jackson or Andy Sonnanstine? David Price is a near lock, but I think you will see Andy stick around and be a strong #5 for next year. They have him under control for a long time and he is getting better and better. Edwin is also getting better, but he may be the odd man out given the strength of the Tampa Bay rotation. You might see the team trade Edwin for a big right field / right handed bat in the off season. That being said, they have him under contract until 2012 as well, so they are not going to be eager to trade him unless they get something really good in return. Starting pitching is at such a HUGE premium and the Rays are stocked!

I agree about Andy Sonnanstine being in the rotation. The Rays may be better off with Edwin Jackson in the bullpen. Rich Aurillia would be a great fit with this young team; not only is he a veteran bat off the bench, but he can also teach said young team. Jon Garland? I don’t think they’d bring him in, seeing as they have 5 solid starters.
I will continue to read your blog. I am very much enjoying it.
