MLB Power Rankings
I'm not going to do Power Rankings often. But we're in June, and it seemed appropriate to give my power rankings for baseball so far.
1. Yankees
Pitching, hitting, defense--they got it all. I do fully expect them to keep this pace up for a while.
2. Dodgers
Amazingly, losing Manny hasn't hurt them. Then again, they play in the NL West. How will Manny's return effect them? It will turn a nine game lead in to a 19 game lead. The NL West is that bad. That said, I don't know how good the Dodgers really are. If you put them in the NL East, do they survive? Maybe, maybe not. It's tough to say. For now, they are cruising.
3. Phillies
Defending champs have played well. They have been getting solid pitching. They could be the team to beat in the NL
4. Red Sox
It's amazing the Sox are doing this well without Manny, and with David Ortiz struggling mightily. Can they keep this pace up? I'm not sure, unless Big Papi really steps up.
5. Rangers
Yes, the Texas Rangers. They can hit the lights out. Unfortunately, slugger Josh Hamilton will be out for a while. Angels have struggled in AL West. Rangers can keep up the pressure.
6. Brewers
I'm surprised by this start, only because they lost Sabathia and Sheets. Still, I don't think they have staying power.
7.Tigers
I think they can run away with the AL Central. Edwin Jackson has to be considered a Cy Young candidate.
8. Blue Jays
Their hot pitching has cooled off, as has their slow start. I don't think they are for real.
9. Cardinals
They have Albert Pujols. Sometimes that's all you need.
10. Mets
It's amazing that they are doing well without, well, half their team. K-Rod hass been great, JJ Putz, not so much.
11. Braves
Nate McLouth could be a big addition. As could top prospect Tommy Hanson
12. Reds
Losing Edison Volquez will hurt big time.
13. Cubs
They have so much talent, it has to come out eventually.
14. Angels
Losing Mark Teixiera, and Guerrero for a period of time has hurt greatly.
15. White Sox
Star prospect Gordon Beckham is up. Can he launch this team into contention?
16. Giants
I sincerely hope Randy Johnson gets win 300. He might be the last.
17. Twins
Those pesky Twins. Always in it. Joe Mauer has been unbelievable. Still need some more offense, though.
18. Padres
Had a great 10 game winning streak, followed by a 1-5 week. The Jake Peavy saga will drag on for awhile.
19. Rays
So many injuries. It's been too hard to overcome.
20. Royals
They had a great start, led by Zack Greinke. Haven't been able to keep it up. If they draft well, they could be good in a few years.
21. Orioles
Matt Wieters has been called up to save the franchise. Give him time, Baltimore.
22. Mariners
Only bright spot is Ichiro.
23. Marlins
Hot April, terrible May. Too young.
24. Diamondbacks
Weren't they good a couple of years ago? Startling fall, with young talent.
25. Indians
Hurt by injury bug. Cliff Lee could be traded.
26. Pirates
Moved McLouth, have good talent in minors.
27. A's
Matt Holliday has been disappointing.
28. Astros
When will the Oswalt sweepstakes start?
29. Rockies
What happened to this team? From World Series appearance, to bottom dweller.
30. Nationals
Just an awful team. Will Stephen Strasburg help?
