Bryce Harper Skipping High School; Right Move?
Bryce Harper, baseball prodigy, all-world talent, is skipping his final two years in high school, obtaining his GED, and attending College of Southern Nevada, where he will play baseball in hopes of entering the 2010 MLB draft. Is this the right move? Is it okay for top talents to skip high school and go to college or beyond in hopes of advancing their careers? If your son or daughter shows amazing skill in painting, does he or she skip high school to get a leg up? I realize sports are a totally different animal. That what happens in sport does not translate to the real world. But Bryce Harper, 16, is leaving high school. He'll be living at home, and by all accounts, can handle the academic load, and probably can handle the baseball. But there is a social element. High school is a time to grow, to discover who you are. You can't do that if you are on the fast track to the pros. They don't know how to handle pressure yet, they don't know how to handle money. Bryce Harper is going to get that really soon. Can he handle it? If he is as good as they say he is, the talent might win out. Even if he doesn't know how to handle pressure, he's too good to fail. The kid has never faced adversity in baseball. Now he's playing in college. How will he handle the pressure? I don't agree with this move. Harper should finish high school. If he wants to go pro then, fine. Go pro. If he wants to go to college after, fine. Go to college. Just don't go now, not when you're not ready emotionally, socially. I hope this move doesn't backfire. I hope that Harper has success in college, and, subsequently, the pros. It would be great for baseball. I just hope he doesn't ruin his chance now.
