Donte Stallworth Gets 30 Days in Jail
Browns WR Donte Stallworth recieved 30 days in jail after agreeing to a plea deal that reduced his sentence for killing someone while driving drunk. He only has to serve 24 days. He was also suspended indefinitely by the NFL. Said Stallworth:
"I accept full responsibility for this horrible tragedy," said Stallworth, who was accompanied at the hearing by his parents, siblings and other supporters. "I will bear this burden for the rest of my life.
Included in the plea deal is eight years of probation, 2 years of house arrest, permanent suspension of license and drug and alcohol classes. I think that part is fair. The part that bothers me is the 30 (well, 24) days in jail. He got out of it because he could pay a significant settlement. 30 days. He killed someone while driving drunk. And while it's apparent he stayed at the scene, the fact remains. He killed someone while drunk driving. Let me repeat that: He killed someone while drunk driving. How can you get 30 days in jail? How, as a judge, can you do that? A lot of talk has been made about President Obama's Supreme Court Nominee, Sonia Sotomayor, and whether she will stick to the Constitution and the rule of the law. Well, how can you stay to the law in situation like this? Stallworth, even though he showed remorse, has to pay for his actions, and not in money. He has to spend at least 5 years in jail. He can't get off scott free, and have the chance to play football. It's not right. It's not fair. If Donte Stallworth did not have the type of money he has, we wouldn't be in this position. But he has the money, and we're stuck here. Stuck in a system that seems to favor the rich and famous, over a system that sticks to the case, no matter who is involved. The rest of his plea deal seems fair. The 30 days? If that's not a slap on the wrist, I don't know what it. It's not right. It's not fair. I can't believe it. 30 days. For killing someone. Wow.
