Mark Messier Coming Back to the Rangers
And no, he's not playing. Hockey legend Mark Messier is coming back to the Rangers as a special assistant to GM Glen Sather.
"I am looking forward to joining the Rangers organization and having the opportunity to learn a new part of the business, working closely with Glen," Messier said in a statement. "I have felt a strong connection to the Rangers, Madison Square Garden and the city of New York from the moment I arrived in 1991. I am honored to begin this new chapter of my career here."
For Rangers fans like myself, Messier is like a God. I was at his jersey retirement ceremony--it was so emotional. Fans love him. Now, he's being groomed as the next GM. And unlike many former players, he's not jumping into a GM or coaching role. He's learning the business. He's learning the ropes. Whenever Sather retires, Messier will be the next Rangers GM. I can't wait for that.
