Tigers Need To Suspend Miguel Cabrera
Miguel Cabrera, Tigers first basemen, is a great player. He does not, however, have great off the field judgment. After the White Sox-Tigers game, Cabrera partied with is White Sox friends. He got home late, drunk. His wife was, understandably, not happy. He apparently woke up their young child. Cabrera had a .26 blood alcohol level. Police came to the scene, took Cabrera away, where he was then picked up by the Tigers. Here's what he had to say:
There was an incident that took place on Saturday, and it is a personal matter. I am sorry this has become a distraction, and I apologize to the Tigers, my teammates, and all of the fans. I would appreciate it if you would respect my family's privacy as I prepare for our next game."
Before I respond, you need to listen to the 911 call from his wife. Now that you've listened, here's my response.
The Tigers need to suspend Cabrera for tomorrow's one game playoff against the Twins. I know it would be a huge loss. I get that. But, from a public relations standpoint, having Cabrera play is not the right call. He hit his wife. He was drinking late before a game. That's UNACCEPTABLE. The Tigers need to make a statement. They need to show fans that they don't condone this kind of behavior on their team. The message goes further when the game is of this magnitude. You might lose because he's not there. You might not. Either way, he can't be out there. He needs to be suspended. He needs to understand that these actions have consequences. I don't think Detroit will suspend him. But they will make the right decision if they do.
