Chelios Keeps On Playing
Chris Chelios is 47. For most athletes, your time has come when you're 47. Your time has come when you're 37. Chris Chelios isn't most athletes. At 47, Chelios is still playing. But not in the NHL. No, they didn't have much use for a 47 year old defenseman. No, Chelios is playing in the AHL. With the Chicago Wolves. Raise your hand if you saw that coming.
I usually don't like it when players play longer than they're supposed to. Readers know I hate Brett Favre for his constant waffling. I didn't like it when Michael Jordan came back with the Wizards. But, somehow, I like that Chelios is still playing. I like it because he's playing in the AHL. He doesn't need the money. He's playing for the love of the game. And isn't that what we all want from athletes? To stop the holdouts, to stop the griping, and just play? Play because they love it, not because it's their path to financial security. Play because it reminds them of being a kid, playing in their backyard, with no worries. I don't know if Chelios will play in the NHL again. I do know that I respect a lot more for trying.
