Favre Now ‘Talking’ With Vikes
Brett Favre is apparently talking to the Vikings about a possible return. We wrote a bit about this speculation here. So let's say this happens. Brett Favre becomes a Viking. How much will this affect them? Let's look.
They need a quarterback. Tarvaris Jackson doesn't exactly scream good quarterback, and neither does Sage Rosenfels. But is Favre the right answer? Is he the guy that's, presumably for one year, going to get them deep into the playoffs? No. Quite simply no. If Brett Favre wasn't 'Brett Favre' and didn't have all the records and we only analyzed him on performance a season ago, we would say he's an average quarterback. As any 39 year old QB will tell you, the arm strength isn't what it used to be. He still tries to do too much on the field, throwing way too many interceptions. Let' s be clear. He was good for the first half of the season. Not going to deny him that. But he clearly began to break down, and the team collapsed at the end of the year because of it. If Favre didn't break down last year, maybe I would change my position. But I didn't think Favre would work out last year and I was right. And I don't think he will work out this year.
But wait. Haven't we been through this before? Wasn't Favre supposed to be the 'savior' of the Jets a season ago? And wasn't he going to finally solve their problems at QB? And through 8 or 9 weeks, he was. But, at 39, his arm is going to break down, his body is going to break down. Right now, he's a guy getting by on his name, not his ability. The Vikings have a playoff-ready team. They have a great running back, and a solid defense. They need a quarterback. Even if Favre does come back for a year ,it's not going to do them any good. And when he retires ( or pretends to) the Vikes are going to be back where they started. And I know you're thinking 'What about Jackson or Rosenfels? They still need a QB'. And you would be right in thinking that. But he didn't work for the Jets. What makes you think he will work in Minnesota a year older? If the Vikings want to contend now, they should've signed someone like Jeff Garcia. If they wanted to contend now, they should've signed someone like Byron Leftwich. But they didn't. And they're stuck in this position. So is it worth the risk? Is is worth bringing in Favre for a year? I say no. I say it's not worth it. The Vikes are thinking about it. Will they make the right call?
